This year, our program will use GOLD®, an online observation-based assessment system that supports effective teaching and children’s development and learning. This tool will help us understand what your child knows and can do and how we can best help him or her develop and learn in his or her own way.
So, how does GOLD® work? First, your child’s teacher will observe what your child says and does during everyday classroom activities, at different times of the day and during many different experiences throughout the year. We will take notes and document what she sees and hears on a regular, ongoing basis. Then, using these observations, the teacher will compare your child’s knowledge, skills, and abilities to the provided research-based widely held expectations, in order to make an informed decision on your child’s strengths and needs. With this knowledge, she can best plan learning experiences that are just right – meeting your child exactly where he or she is – and will help your child succeed.
It’s important to know that GOLD® is not a test. Children aren’t taken away from classroom activities and tested on what they know in relation to specific skills. Instead, the teacher observes children to find out what their strengths, needs, and interests are in all areas of development and learning. In this way, the teacher will gather information that helps her focus on what’s most important for your child.
We look forward to sharing more information with you as the year continues. With the help of GOLD®, we’ll be able to show you all the things your child knows and can do, and what he or she is likely to do next. We’re looking forward to a great year!
